Danish Research Center for Magnetic Resonance, Hvidovre Hospital, Copenhagen University Hospital

The MR department has clinical as well as research responsibilities. Among the research activities brain research is an important field. The research has dealt with methodological as well as basis biological and medical aspects. The methods include fMRI, diffusion tensor mapping, flow measurement with and without contrast agent, partial volume measurements, and spectroscopy. Substantial research activities are allocated to both degenerative brain diseases and psychiatric diseases. In the coming years fMRI is expected to become further used for functional brain mapping. Until now, this research has in CBRC predominantly been performed with PET.

The department is equipped with 3 whole-body Siemens scanners: Impact 1.0 Tesla, Vision 1.5 Tesla and Trio 3.0 Tesla. The latter, to be installed in August 2002 as well as the 1.5 Tesla, is donated by the Simon Spies Foundation. In addition there is an 4.7 Tesla experimental scanner from Varian for small animal studies.

The department is chaired by Professor DMSc Olaf B. Paulson. Senior brain researches are Lars Hanson, physicist, PhD and Egill Rostrup, MD. The staff for brain research comprises approximately 10 researchers, excluding two technicians and secretaries.
